We have 35+ years combined experience in teaching and mentoring students and consulting with bands! We have also developed our programmes to be as thorough as possible and meet every possible need we can help with to accelerate your career in music.
Onyx Music's VIBRATIONS programmes are completely free and there is no cost to take part in the programme.
This is because we are a community-interest company (CIC) that is funded entirely by the government, meaning our only goal is to help you and give back to our community!
As long as you are willing to learn and love music you have everything you need to get started with Onyx Music.
We are similar to a lot of other programmes. However we offer the opportunity to collaborate after the programme finishes as well as access to a growing community and offer marketing training to kickstart your career. In short, you get:
- Hard skills as well as music skills
- A support network and mentorship
- Opportunities to collaborate with other aspiring musicians and technicians
Onyx Music programmes are flexible and we understand people have different commitments. We work to accommodate all participants' schedules where possible.
The online community is a safe space and will be monitored to prevent any offensive or abusive content which will not be tolerated. We only promote inclusion and collaboration within our online community. Our online community is:
- Moderated to ensure it's a safe space
- Full of musicians and technicians just like yourself
- Led by highly experienced mentors
- Carefully constructed to be as supportive as humanly possible!

Meet the brain

Matt Dean
Session drummer/percussionist, drums and percussion tutor and director of Onyx Music.
Matt’s music career started at the age of 15 when he landed his first professional job as a house drummer in a venue. From then, he has worked with many different bands and artists and is experienced in recording and touring. He has toured with the highly acclaimed tribute act Guns2Roses (who at the time were working with the original Guns n’ Roses drummer- Steven Adler before Matt took the job) and also USA rock band - Tantric.
His career has led him to have personal connections with music legends such as Jeff Wayne and Dan Reed to name a few. Matt has taught workshops in schools, colleges and also business establishments for open days/demonstrations. He has taught drums privately since 2008 and then taught in the music school department of Harmonics Music from 2010-2023. He still currently teaches private lessons to a wide range of ages and abilities from beginners- to music grades and even LIPA students to help them get their degrees.
Jack Walsh
Position
Jack works with a plethora of bands in the recording studio and live; as an engineer, producer and live sound technician. Working with a wide range of genres and artists, Jacks most noticeable gigs have included: live sound for P.P Arnold, stage managing for Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes and recording Liverpool local legends Zander and the Peace Pirates.
